dcp_2281.jpg (77753 bytes) 0730hrs, Wednesday 8th, the day begins to dawn over Camp Dune and   even I am awake and ready to roll!
dcp_2283.jpg (65836 bytes) This is the main camp...
dcp_2284.jpg (67916 bytes)
dcp_2285.jpg (73115 bytes) ... and this is the alternative camp in the shelter of the crescent of the dune.
dcp_2287.jpg (77416 bytes) A failed attempt to capture the sand blowing over the edge of the dune.
dcp_2288.jpg (58884 bytes) The Team Tony Hadley Rover is still adopting the 'Latvian Position' before its final inspection.  It is subsequently declared fit for the days activities.
dcp_2289.jpg (97989 bytes) Back on the trail.
dcp_2290.jpg (103820 bytes) The Challenge convoy reaches out towards the horizon.
dcp_2292.jpg (106047 bytes) Well... there aren't many bushes around these parts...!
dcp_2293.jpg (71639 bytes) That's where we've come from...
dcp_2295.jpg (64896 bytes) ... and that's where we're going to...
dcp_2296.jpg (59395 bytes) ... if the truck holds up over these damned corrugations!  By now our right-hand front shock absorber was knocking badly over this sort of terrain.
dcp_2297.jpg (43700 bytes) Some more sand.
dcp_2298.jpg (31979 bytes) And some more.
dcp_2299.jpg (64297 bytes) Cruising past the Cobbs.
dcp_2300.jpg (77064 bytes) The Boy Racers find a tiny bit of hard ground amidst a lot of soft sand.
dcp_2301.jpg (85820 bytes) Team Tony Hadley: They got stuck in the sand, then  Abedlahyol got them unstuck by revving the nuts off the Rover in 3rd gear... and spectacularly finishing off the clutch in a pall of smoke.  Here, Karl finally admits defeat after a determined attempt to prolong the patient's life.
dcp_2302.jpg (87215 bytes) After sorting out their essential kit, donating some of the rest to other Teams, and securing their own onward travel within other cars, Chris, Andrew and James say their good-byes to the Rover.

You can't really see it here, but the sand was blowing quite fiercely in the wind.  This was not a pleasant stop by any means.

dcp_2304.jpg (46390 bytes) Most of their remaining gear (tent, jerry cans, spare wheels, jump leads, etc) ended up in the Cobb Cruisers van as it was snapped up by Abedlahyol.

We were soon on the move again, passing by even more sand.

dcp_2305.jpg (60593 bytes) Yes, it's sand. What do you expect in the desert?
dcp_2306.jpg (63536 bytes)
dcp_2307.jpg (60378 bytes) More corrugations.
dcp_2308.jpg (67517 bytes) Loose, dusty sand.  It was also very hot.  Many of the cars were suffering with the heat and maybe the quality of the fuel.  Our Niva was pinking so badly that we were losing a lot of power and struggled to get through some of the soft sand despite having 4x4 and using the low ratio gears.
dcp_2309.jpg (56616 bytes) Golden dunes in the distance, pale greyish sand under foot. We're now well on our way through the desert section of the Challenge, and heading towards the coast for the famed Beach Run.
